Sarah Savalanpour is an Iranian filmmaker,curator, and art educator. Her practice involves archival research and filmmaking; using both documentary and fictional formats, her work investigates alternative narratives and the possibility of an imaginary archive in the fields of art and education. In her works, she frequently uses oral histories, found footage, and questions the role of the past and memory in the future of the archive and women’s cinema in particular. She received her bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Tehran’s Art University and has been a student at HFBK Hamburg since 2019, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Time-based Media and a Master of Art Mediation with an emphasis on media studies, as well as film mediation strategies.
She is currently a member of the dokumentarfilmwoche Hamburg team, where she focuses on curating and conducting research on documentaries from the SWANA region.
She additionally works as the Mediation Coordinator at „Majlis“ in MK&G Hamburg, where she curates a public outreach program centered on cross-cultural communication and translation strategies.
Her most recent research has focused on Iranian documentary film and the representation of Iranian women in cinema. In her research, she attempted to rethink the concept of violence against women and how it has been portrayed in cinema.
